Vice President, Massachusetts Managing State Counsel – Title Insurance (MA)

Our East Coast–based client is a highly respected and established leader in the Title Insurance industry and is seeking a Vice President, Massachusetts Managing State Counsel to serve as the senior legal and underwriting leader for the Massachusetts market.

This highly visible leadership role will oversee underwriting operations in the state, manage a team of underwriting attorneys, and serve as the company’s primary representative within the Massachusetts title insurance and real estate community. The position offers a unique opportunity to step into a leadership role with meaningful influence across the organization while helping shape the company’s continued growth and presence in Massachusetts.

This role is ideal for an experienced title insurance attorney who brings strong legal judgment, leadership capability, industry credibility, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach. Core Responsibilities

State Leadership & Underwriting Oversight

• Serve as the senior legal and underwriting authority for the Massachusetts market, providing leadership and strategic oversight of underwriting operations across the state.
• Guide underwriting strategy while ensuring consistent, thoughtful risk management practices that support both agent relationships and company growth.
• Provide high-level legal guidance and underwriting counsel to attorney agents and internal teams on complex residential and commercial real estate matters.
• Research, analyze, and resolve sophisticated title issues, including matters involving large multi-unit and multi-site developments.
• Make strategic risk assessment decisions related to the issuance of title insurance policies while appropriately managing company exposure.
• Evaluate insurability, advise on coverage, endorsements, and underwriting exceptions.

This role provides a significant level of autonomy and trust in underwriting judgment, allowing an experienced leader to influence underwriting standards and decision-making within the Massachusetts market.


Team Leadership & Development

• Lead and manage a team of underwriting attorneys and support staff within the Massachusetts operation.
• Mentor and develop underwriting counsel and staff, helping strengthen the team’s expertise and professional growth.
• Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture focused on responsiveness, legal excellence, and strong agent relationships.
• Participate in hiring decisions and team expansion as the organization continues to grow.

Industry Leadership & Market Representation

• Serve as the company’s primary public-facing legal representative within the Massachusetts title insurance and real estate community.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with attorney agents, real estate professionals, lenders, and industry partners.
• Represent the company at industry associations, conferences, and professional events throughout the region.
• Lead educational seminars and presentations for attorneys, agents, and real estate professionals.

Business Development & Strategic Partnership

• Support agent recruitment, development, and relationship management efforts.
• Collaborate closely with sales and business development teams to strengthen the company’s market presence in Massachusetts.
• Contribute to strategic planning initiatives related to underwriting operations, market expansion, and agent engagement.
• Provide insight to senior leadership regarding market trends, legal developments, and competitive dynamics.

Education & Experience Requirements

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in Massachusetts.
• Significant experience in real estate law and title insurance underwriting within the Massachusetts market.
• Prior experience as Managing State Counsel, Senior Underwriting Counsel, Associate State Counsel, or in a comparable leadership role within a title insurance organization.
• Deep understanding of Massachusetts real estate transactions, title insurance underwriting, and regulatory considerations.
• Proven ability to exercise independent legal judgment while leading and mentoring a team.
• Established professional relationships within the Massachusetts real estate and title insurance community.
