Interim Director of Clinical Laboratory

A leading health system is seeking an experienced Interim Director of Clinical Laboratory to provide strategic and operational leadership for a large, high-volume laboratory during a critical period of transition. This role offers the opportunity to oversee a broad range of services, guide leadership development, and maintain the momentum of key initiatives that directly impact patient care and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight of multiple laboratory areas, including Core Laboratory (coagulation, hematology, urinalysis, specimen management, sendouts), Customer Service/Call Center (24/7 operation), and Microbiology & Infectious Molecular

  • Lead and support a team of approximately 120–130 FTEs, including managers and supervisors.

  • Mentor and develop managers and supervisors to strengthen leadership capacity and reduce reliance on bench work.

  • Ensure continuity of critical operations while advancing current initiatives in supervisor training, workflow redesign, KPI development, and cross-training of staff.

  • Drive employee engagement and build a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Utilize data and metrics to inform workflow and operational decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Technologist/Scientist certification from ASCP or AMT-MT required. (BB, C, CG, CT, H, HTL, MT/MLS, M, MB) required. 

  • Proven track record of leadership managing large, complex teams and multiple service areas in a clinical laboratory setting.

  • Strong skills in staff development, employee engagement, and change management.

  • Expertise in project planning, workflow optimization, and process improvement.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage frontline staff and leadership alike.

Engagement Details:

  • Start Date: October

  • Term: Minimum 6 months, with potential for extension.

  • Focus: Provide immediate leadership, ensure continuity, and maintain progress on strategic initiatives.
