Our client, a non-profit helping youth in Boston is looking for an Accounting Manager to join their team! This role will partner closely with the CFO and other operations leaders overseeing day-to-day accounting and helping shape the financial future of the organization. They are undergoing a capital expansion project that will greatly amplify their service offerings and operation scope and are looking for new leaders to help drive it. This role is perfect for an auditor with exposure to non-profits or an experienced accountant looking to switch orgs or step into a leadership role. This role will work cross functionally with operations and mission leaders a great role to get exposure to the overall org instead of just spreadsheets. 

Supervision preferred but not required. Hybrid role with some WFH and in-person collaboration. 
 

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities)

  • Serve as a key liaison during the external audit process, managing auditor relationships and all related deliverables.
  • Produce and interpret financial statements, management-level reports, and variance analyses on a regular basis.
  • Administer the accounting system end-to-end, including user access, configuration, and chart of accounts maintenance.
  • Champion process improvement initiatives that strengthen efficiency, internal controls, and data integrity across the finance function.
  • Execute close procedures each period including reconciliations, closing entries, accrual postings, and balance sheet review.
  • Supervise AP and Payroll staff to ensure all vendors and employees are paid accurately and on schedule.
  • Coordinate preparation of all required governmental and national affiliate reporting, ensuring deadlines are consistently met.
  • Partner with the CFO on Board and Finance Committee materials, including monthly financials, forecasts, and formal presentations.
  • Oversee reconciliation across all subsystems monthly, including banking, investments, payables, payroll, membership and program platforms, and development databases.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff while building a collaborative, high-performance team culture.
  • Support operating cash flow management, including oversight of weekly disbursement cycles.
  • Ensure proper financial stewardship of grant funds and timely submission of all grant reports.
  • Prepare and review journal entries to maintain completeness and accuracy of the general ledger.
  • Advise the CFO on emerging financial risks and issues affecting the organization.
  • Play an active role in the annual budget development process.
  • Maintain compliance with current accounting standards and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver departmental financials and routine reporting packages to the CFO on a consistent cadence.
  • Contribute to special projects and ad hoc analysis in support of broader financial objectives.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP required; nonprofit sector experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of directly relevant accounting or finance experience from an Audit or in-house accounting perspective 
  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance audits, Uniform Financial Report submissions, and Form 990 preparation
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required (Accounting concentration preferred)
  • Grant accounting and cost allocation experience a plus not required 
  • Experience with fund accounting software; Abila MIP familiarity a plus
  • Advanced Excel proficiency required; comfortable across Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Working knowledge of banking operations and cash management practices
